"SUDDEN UPHEAVAL"

Easter is still a conundrum in New Zealand: the festival of new life, resurrection, rabbits and eggs ... all mid-autumn! Any excuse to indulge in chocolate is willingly taken, however.

The Artist Goldsmith Gallery has enjoyed an exciting summer of exhibitions, Taylor Wood’s group ‘Linguistix’ being especially exciting to talk about and discuss in varied context. Retrieving our photos of Berlin 1990 after 20 years in an album brought vivid memories of the Wall’s demise back to mind; an epic event. Jackie Guthrie’s emotional interpretations of Waiheke landscapes on canvas – and her most recent work, clearly influenced by a trip to Australia’s red centre – found much acclaim. Steph Lusted’s collection of resin-set Beetles, Bugs and Butterflies in jewellery also provoked much comment.

QUEENS BIRTHDAY WEEKEND, June 5, 6 & 7, sees the presentation of a new collection by Christine’s own hand. “Sudden Upheaval” refers to the formation of the Phantom Quartz. This ‘crystal in a crystal’ experienced two different geological conditions in its creation, a major shift in the rock causing the growth of two different structures in one space. One crystal surrounds another! Bright, clear, sharp and full of intrigue, these stones demand thorough investigation. Two of our favourite stone-cutters have supplied material, Tom Munsteiner and Dieter Lorenz, both masters of their craft.

Supporting these portable gems is a magnificent (glass) Crystal Ball that we recently acquired. The size of a soccer ball (and VERY much heavier!) it has all the attributes of Gypsy Rose Lee’s fortune revealer. Fully cleansed of any negativity in the equinoctial tide, this is ready to absorb the positivity of our many wonderful studio visitors.

The Waiheke Community Art Gallery is organising a weekend of Open Studios for Queen’s Birthday, so please come over, visit us and continue to enjoy a day or two of Island Art?www.WaihekeArtGallery.org.nz for details. Let me know on time and I can probably collect you from the Ferry!

Christine is happy to take orders for new work, remakes of your existing jewellery or upgrading strings of pearls; should you have one of her necklaces, please bring it with you for a restring (every 18 months is ideal), and for a clean! All part of the service. And put all that unworn gold in a bag and see what it could become?

We look forward to welcoming you on Waiheke.

Christine Hafermalz-Wheeler.

Now is an excellent time to consider having jewellery remodelled, or using a loose stone; Christine happily melts down unwanted pieces, reshaping the gold to a new, exciting life. Bring everything to the studio and we can discuss possibilities. Call us on (09) 372 7509.
